Piazza Ltd.

The Art and the Artist

Anne and I originally moved to Chadds Ford Pennsylvania to pursue a renaissance dream and return to a life style with different values.  After successful careers in the high-tech corporate world, we decided to follow our hearts and create heirlooms for future generations to cherish. Our goal is to create precious treasures of intrinsic value for the art, labor, materials and tradition that are the essence of each and every piece. We moved to the tiny colonial village of Steelville PA in 2005 where we built a new studio on the scenic Octoraro River in the heart of Amish country. The ambiance of our new location provides both inspiration and reward for our work and we frequently welcome our collectors on their travels.

The signature of our exceptionally unique pieces is the raised dimensions of the artwork.  Each minute dot and line of art is hand applied or "slip trailed" in the form of a semi liquid mixture of clay and glaze. When fired in the kiln the artwork vitrifies and is married to the base piece to which it is applied.  This fusion produces the classical treasures of Piazza Ltd..

All the gold used on our pieces is 24 karat Dresden gold that is fired onto the porcelain and all the caps are 24 karat gold plated.

The art itself has it's roots in ancient "Satsuma" porcelain where the dominant shadow line of subjects was done in raised relief by slip trailing porcelain.  The subject was then colored in by using under glazes. The next relative usage of a similar technique would be Wedgwood in which the art was cast in a separate mold and then hand applied to the main vessel or form.

The art of Piazza Ltd. may be considered a modern version of Satsuma as it is much more intense in relief or a primitive form of the Wedgwood technique as all the raised art is created by hand.

Anne Piazza's history is rich in the study of art from around the world, including Italy, Russia, China, Scandinavia, Spain, North Africa, Australia, Europe and the colonial crafts of America.  Anne's style and designs draw upon her exposure to peasant art as well as that of the great masters of Europe.  Strong influences come from the Chinoiserie of the orient, Russian Flower Painting, the Rosemaling of Norway, the Bauernmalerei of Germany and the porcelains of England, France and Hungary.
